The Emergency Medical Technology program is designed for students who are licensed EMTs or eligible for EMT licensure and want to advance their knowledge and clinical skills. Based on national emergency medical services education standards, the program focuses on both the theory and application of advanced emergency care for patients experiencing medical or traumatic emergencies.
You will learn how to:
- Understand the role of EMS within the broader healthcare system
- Demonstrate the professional behaviors and responsibilities expected of an AEMT
- Apply anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and human development concepts to patient care
- Perform advanced patient assessment and initial assessment procedures
- Identify and perform lifesaving interventions related to airway, breathing and circulation
- Administer medications and understand core pharmacology concepts
- Perform intravenous access and fluid therapy
- Use blind insertion airway devices and other advanced EMT-level interventions
- Assess and manage medical emergencies, trauma emergencies and special populations
- Apply EMS operations knowledge in transport, rescue, extrication and special incident response
- Understand medical-legal, ethical and safety responsibilities in emergency care
- Gain clinical experience that supports readiness for advanced practice
